Your Wellness Matters: You Matter – Start Prioritising Yourself First

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of our well-being. However, prioritizing self-care is essential for leading a fulfilling and balanced life. Here are some valuable suggestions that will help you relax regularly and make self-care a part of your daily routine.

Make Time for Relaxation

  1. Set Aside Dedicated Time: Agree with yourself to set aside a specific time each day dedicated to relaxation. If finding the time to do the exercises in this book is an issue, check out chapter 16 on time management.
  2. Start Small: The length of time required each day to practice relaxation techniques varies. Start small. Doing a relaxation exercise for five minutes regularly is better than doing it only once for an hour. Consistency is key.
  3. Choose the Right Time: Decide when is the best time to relax based on your schedule by answering these questions: When do you need to relax most? When can you realistically break away from external demands to take some time for yourself?

Practical Examples from Clients

Here are some examples of what clients in our stress-management and relaxation classes have found most helpful and doable:

  • Morning Relaxation: Beginning the day with a relaxation exercise makes people more focused and proactive in dealing with the stressful demands of their day.
  • Midday Break: Taking a relaxation break during the day can reverse growing tension that would otherwise culminate in painful symptoms such as headaches or indigestion.
  • End-of-Day Wind Down: Relaxing before leaving work or upon arriving home allows a person to decompress from the tensions of a busy day and become calm enough to enjoy personal time at home.
  • Sleep Routine: Using a relaxation exercise to go to sleep quickly and then sleep soundly can result in waking up refreshed.

Creating the Right Environment

  • Find a Quiet Place: Choose a quiet place where you will not be interrupted to learn the techniques. Once mastered, many relaxation techniques can be done even in stressful situations.
  • Communicate Your Needs: Since this is a new activity for you, let people around you know what you are doing. Ask them to help out by leaving you alone without distractions. Family members, fellow office workers, and friends are usually very supportive once they understand what you are doing and why.
  • Timing Matters: It’s best not to practice a relaxation exercise right after eating a big meal or when very tired unless your purpose is to fall asleep.
  • Comfort is Key: You will enjoy your experience more if you choose a comfortable position in a location with a comfortable temperature, wear loose clothing, and remove your contacts or glasses.

Remember, your wellness matters. By making relaxation and self-care a priority, you’ll be better equipped to handle the demands of daily life and enjoy a more balanced, fulfilling existence. Take that first step today—because you matter.
